History was made today, January 20, 2021, with the inauguration for Vice President Kamal Harris: The first black woman, first woman and first South Asian American to be elected to this high office in American history. Facing a crushing global pandemic and the threat of possible domestic terrorism, Joe Biden was sworn-in as the 46th president of the United States and Kamala Harris as Vice President, pledging to unite the country and calling on Americans to end the "uncivil war" that has fractured the nation.
In a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol that kept with tradition while being unlike any other inauguration in U.S. history, Biden and Harris took the oath of office amidst a socially distanced audience in a city that has been locked down because of the dual threats of Covid-19, which has killed over 400,000 people in the U.S., and worries over another attack just weeks after the deadly violence at the Capitol.
In an impassioned address, Biden repeatedly stressed the need for unity in the divided nation, calling it the only "path forward."
"This is our historic moment of crisis and challenge — and unity is the path forward," he said.
President Biden further asserted - “The dream of justice for all will be deferred no longer” - and at African Human Rights Coalition we take to heart how this will impact global refugees and asylum seekers seeking safety in the United States.
We at African Human Rights Coalition congratulate President Biden and Vice President Harris and together with America and the World, look forward to all heading their call for unity to bring healing, repair and remedy to a very broken America and world. (Melanie Nathan)
