Statement by AFRICAN HUMAN RIGHTS COALITION on D.C. Shooting
African Human Rights Coalition condemns in the strongest possible terms the horrific violence that occurred in Washington, D.C., leaving two members of the National Guard critically injured. We extend our deepest solidarity to their families, friends, and colleagues during this unimaginable time, and we join all Americans in praying for their full and swift recovery. Violence of this nature has no place in our country. We stand with all who have been impacted—directly and indirectly—by this tragedy, and we honor the brave service of those who put their lives at risk to protect our communities.
In this moment of national concern, we implore President Trump and all public leaders not to politicize this event in ways that endanger vulnerable communities or fuel prejudice. Refugees who have survived war, persecution, torture, criminalization, and unspeakable trauma—among them LGBTQI+ refugees from African countries—have come to the United States only after rigorous, multilayered vetting and years of displacement and suffering. They had nothing to do with this atrocity, and they must not be scapegoated because of it. Many already live with heightened fear due to hostile rhetoric that echoes the terror they fled. Re-traumatizing refugees is neither moral nor productive for the nation. At a time when unity and clarity are essential, let us ensure that our response is guided by truth, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to protect all who call America home.
