AHRC Stands as Signatory Pleading Biden Admin to extend Public Comment on Asylum Ban

By Melanie Nathan, March 01, 2023. nathan@AfricanHRC.org

The Biden administration recently proposed a new rule that will drastically limit access to asylum for people arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border, and yet, is only allowing the public a mere 30 days to provide comments.

In response, 172 national, state, and local organizations, including african Human Rights Coalition, wrote to the Biden administration urging it to allow at least 60 days for public comment on the rule.

The proposed asylum ban has vast implications on all stages of asylum processing, imposing new and complex requirements on asylum seekers before they reach the border, during their initial fear screening, as well as during immigration court review.

In the letter, we assert: "The human cost [of this rule] is beyond measure and demands the most careful research, analysis, and public consultation. It is highly inappropriate to afford the public a mere 30 days to comment on a proposal that violates domestic laws and international obligations on its face."
