African Human Rights Coalition (AHRC) condemns the violent language, and lies by Donald Trump targeting Haitian immigrants in the United States of America and calls for it to stop.
Since 2016 Donald J. Trump, a former President of the United States, who is now campaigning for office again, has made consistent statements scapegoating, denigrating, and vilifying immigrants in the United States. His lies and attacks have found specific target communities which have included Mexicans, Africans, Muslims and now his latest, Haitians.
This anti-immigrant trajectory has escalated to the point where he is threatening to deport people who are legally in this country. Since World War 2, the World said "never again." When Hitler targeted Jews he rounded up people, removed them from their homes, separated families, transported them in cattle trucks, forced them into camps, and ultimately it led to their extermination. It started with scapegoating. It progressed. Until it lead to concentration camps and genocide. How do we know where this would lead? The people of Germany fell for it. They believed it was justified. With this in mind we cannot stand back to allow what is clearly a similar path continue.
America is a country founded on immigration. There is no place in this country for anti-immigrant rhetoric. It leads to violence which is likely to spread to all immigrant populations. Haitians are living in fear as are all immigrant communities at this time. These are our neighbors and friends and we cannot allow it. We must step up.
It is becoming increasingly dangerous when we allow what is hate speech, poised for violence to be normalized. There is no First Amendment Right to instigate violence.
While AHRC stands with our Haitian community, offering solidarity during this extremely difficult time, we call on the MEDIA to stop exploiting this vicious language and to silence the mikes, failing which MEDIA will be complicit in the result. This does not need the kind of reporting we are seeing. We are calling for all America to come forward and condemn this vile hate.
In the spirit of UBUNTU, in commitment to "NEVER AGAIN", and for the LOVE of this country it is up to us all to stop this from spreading any further. Now. Melanie Nathan, Executive Director, African Human Rights Coalition.
